Australian War Memorial
The Australian War Memorial is one of Canberra’s best attractions to see while visiting. The memorial commemorates the sacrifice of many Australians who have died in war. The world-class museum is jam-packed with history and provides a platform allowing you to interpret and understand the impact of war on Australian Society.
You can take tours, see aircraft from the wars, attend regular talks, speeches, workshops and exhibitions and relive the experience of the fallen soldiers through dioramas showing the devastation and danger of a battlefield. For a truly moving experience, attend the Last Post ceremony held at 4.55pm each day. You can even find out about a relative who served in any of the Australian conflicts since the 1860s.
Plus there’s a collection of works by Australian artists including Arthur Streeton, William Dobell and Sidney Nolan, and you can visit the Hall of Valour honouring Australians who have received the Victoria Cross, the highest award for bravery in a time of war.
All the fun happens in the interactive Discovery Zone featuring five environments reflecting Australia’s military history. The educational space allows kids to take control of an Iroquois helicopter, search for enemy targets through the periscope of a Cold War submarine and dodge sniper fire in a First World War trench.
Located on Treloar Crescent at the top of Anzac Parade, the Australian War Memorial is open from 10am – 5pm (except Christmas Day) and admission is free. Onsite parking is available, or you can catch public transport from Wentworth Avenue just near Diplomat Boutique Hotel.
